Alley Artifacts #12 “Walnut Hill Shoppette”

Alley Artifacts #12 “Walnut Hill Shoppette.” Watercolor on paper. 7.5″x 11″ 19cm x 27cm).

Older neighborhoods in Denver (built pre WWII) usually have a small cluster of shops every mile or so. These served locals in a time when far fewer people had cars. This top left image is detail from a shoppette in what was known as “Walnut Hill.” The neighborhood is diverse; mostly post-war 2-bedroom houses with a scattering of older, early 20th century homes.
